Lots of booty. Lots of booty and sheer. The theme for this year was "China: Through the Looking Glass". There were a few who stuck passionately to the theme, others unknowingly offending the theme, and many who remained neutral. Although I will talk about a few looks, I just need to get something off my chest: Why all the sheer-butt-baring pieces of fabric? Beyoncé, Kim Kardashian, and Jlo all disappointed me, to be honest.
With Beyoncé, I was hoping for something different. This gown is very similar to what she wore in 2012, and I just think she can do better. She's talented, intelligent, and beautiful; she has a long and still growing career- why the need to "remind" us of her body? Why not use the Met Gala, one of the most couture and creative events of the year, to experiment and express yourself through fashion? Fashion is art- it's not showing off.
With Kim Kardashian and Jlo: I expected it. In my opinion, Jlo should experiment and create a bit more; but both women are known for their penchant to wear tight gowns that hug (or strangle) their curves.
This brings me to my question: Why do we, as a society, feel the need to show off our bodies? It's as if a curvy body is now the only symbol of beauty that society looks to. The butt obsession is tiring and makes me wonder what will the next unrealistic body trend be. Girls, love yourselves no matter what, and remember, you do not need to show off your body in order to gain approval or spark interest. If someone only approves of you or is interested because of your gorgeous bod, you shouldn't want their attention in the first place.
Now, *deep exhale*, to the fashion.
This is a great men's outfit. Honestly- love the black on gold, love the embroidery, love the sunglasses. Props to Olivier Rousteing. As for the ethics of this outfit- he did take the theme to heart, and I didn't see anything hugely wrong.
Okay, I liked it until I saw the pizza and omelette memes. Other than that, it is a beautiful, extravagant, piece. Not in love with the color- but you can tell a lot of work was put into it (made by Guo Pei).
For some reason I truly love this dress. Love it. It is artistic, interesting, with a little bit of humor. It makes you look twice.
I just didn't like it- the awkward cut, the extensive sideboob, the bleh color. She's beautiful, but it didn't work for me.
She looks adorable; she is beautiful. However, it's not working. The awkward cut widens her middle, and the flowers are a lot. Like, too much. In the wise words of my mom: "Is she getting married?"
And for best dressed… Zendaya.
I mean, she's just stunning. She absolutely works the dress- and look at that piece! When I saw this, my jaw dropped. Love the headpiece, the interesting dynamics, the shape. This is fashion.
